Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre, Newington, London, UK. 24th September 2020. Most shops and cafes at the centre are already empty but traders and shoppers spend a last day at The Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre as developers Delancey close the centre's doors for the last time. When it opened in 1965 it was the first indoor shopping mall in the UK. Delancey plans to demolish the centre to make way for nearly 1,000 new homes, a pedestrianised town centre, a new college building for the University of the Arts London, leisure and office space, as well as a new station.
