Transplanted kidney. Coloured 3-D computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest and abdomen of a kidney transplant patient. A contrast medium has been used to show the blood vessels. The aorta, the body's main artery, runs down centre and divides into the two iliac arteries that serve the legs. At lower right are the blood vessels serving the transplanted kidney. The original kidney (right of centre) is not removed. Transplantation replaces a failed or failing kidney with a donor kidney. The kidneys filter waste from the blood and excrete it as urine. This image was created using OsiriX medical imaging software which allows surgeons to navigate around the body using fly- through animations of the data.
