I doubt if anaverage of one Ring-necked Duck a year iskilled in the State of Maine. Its markings are as follows: Head and neckof brilliant bluish- or purplish-black, with aslight crest. Around the neck a collar of deeporange brown or chestnut; lower neck and up-per breast blackish. Above blackish, scapularsfaintly waved with gray. Bill black, edges, base and a beltacross near the tip bluish gray. Feet bluishgray with black webs. Iris yellow. The female has no collar. Where the male isblack she is brownish. Wing and speculum thesame as in the male. The bluish gray color ofthe speculum is the main point of difference be-tween the female of this species and the femalesof the Scaups, whose speculum is white, al-though females of the present species may beslightly browner above and on the flanks. Length of the Ring-necked Duck from sixteento eighteen inches; extent from twenty-eight tothirty inches. THE WHISTLER. GOLDEN-EYED DUCK. (Clangula americana.)
