Transit of Venus on 8 June 2004. Venus, the black dot seen passing in front of the Sun, is an Earth-sized planet that orbits between the Earth and the Sun. A transit occurs when Venus passes in front of the Sun as seen from Earth. Transits by Venus across the Sun are rare, occurring in 8-year pairs separated by more than 100 years. Transits in the modern era occurred in 1874, 1882, and 2004. The next transit will occur on 6 June 2012, with the following pair of transits occurring in 2117 and 2125.
