Sugarcane (Saccharum spontaneum) growing in a greenhouse as part of a project to improve its effectiveness as a biofuel. Sugarcane is a plant that produces biomass especially efficiently, making it a naturally good source of renewable biofuel. Here varieties are being developed to be maximise biomass, rate of growth and resistance to cold and disease. All of these factors would make it easy to grow large quantities in a range of climates, providing a high-yield, reliable source of renewable fuel.
