Illustration of a cardiographic device developed by the French scientist Etienne-Jules Marey (1830-1904) to record successive movements of the heart. The device was a fore-runner of the electrocardiograph (ECG). From New Dictionary of Practical Medicine and Surgery by Dr Jaccoud (1868).
