Storm research. Diagram showing equipment used to detect the electricity associated with a dust storm. A 10 metre long pole supports a five-pronged electrode, attached by wire to a series of electrolytic solutions and then to earth. Large amounts of electricity were detected by a Captain Geldhart during a dust storm in 1853 in Bengal using just such equipment. The electricity is static formed by the innumerable collisions between dust grains in the storm loud. This was first published in 'Whirlwinds and Dust Storms of India' by P. Baddeley in 1860.
