False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Enterobacter sp (gram negative), a rod- shaped bacterium not exceeding microns in width. They are found primarily in water, soil, sewage & the intestinal tract of humans & animals. Enterobacter capable of growing in the presence or absence of oxygen. Under anaerobic conditions it obtains energy by fermenting carbohydrates; under aerobic conditions it is able to use a wide range of organic compounds. The green colour scattered within the organism is the unbound genetic material, the DNA of the cell. Magnification: x23'500 at 35mm, x47'000 at 6x7cm size.
