Narrowed leg arteries. Coloured angiogram of the legs of a 66-year-old man. There are irregular narrowings (stenosis) seen throughout both of the patient's legs, which are usually caused by atheroma (fatty deposits on the inner wall). There is also a gap in the patient's left femoral artery at upper right, indicating a blockage. Treatment for stenosis is usually an angioplasty, a surgical procedure where a stent (wire mesh tube) is inserted into the narrowed region and expanded, which reopens the artery to ensure normal blood flow. Blockages can be remedied by an artery bypass, where an artery piece is grafted around the blocked region to allow the blood to continue past it.
