A sentry position, part of the Hornworks, Fortress Isabel II, La Mola, in the Port of Mahon, Menorca, Balearic Islands, Hornworks is an irregular shaped salient made up of a front with two wings. The Fortress Isabel II, La Mola, in The Port of Mahon was built between 1850 and 1875 and is a fine example of late 19th Century German-style fotification with some influence by the French architects that designed the fortress, Carnot and Montalembert. The construction of the Fortress of Isabel II began in an era when France and England were disputing power in the Mediterranean. The Spanish Government considered control of Mahon Harbour to be strategic in order to defend the Balearic islands forming a rear guard for the Spanish peninsular against British or French attack. The Fortress however has never been attacked and therefore remains in a relatively good state of repair. It's role has simply been that of a deterrant. During the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship it became an infamous military and political prison where many executions took place. The Army abandoned the Fort in 1998 and is now open for tours. The fortress has more recently been used as a film set for the series "Hornblower"
