Not a house marked the siteof the present city of Rock Island, which thencontained only a trovcrnment post. Mr. Tiudallbegan the development of a farm and was verysuccessful in his business operations, becoming awell-to-do man. His wife died at the birth of oursubject, after which he wedded Maria (Weiskeaver)Hamilton. His death occurred in 1883, at the ageof seventy-tliree years. In politics, he was a Re-publican, and, in religious belief, was a Universal-ist. The family numbered eight children: AVilliamE., who now resides in Washington; C.
