During the years 1762 and 1763, when Robert Adam wasengaged upon the work at Kedleston and other important com-missions, he was also employed at both Fonthill, Wiltshire, andWitham House, Somersetshire, the seats of William Beckford, theLord Mayor of London. In the year 1762 he executed alterations at Witham House, and these were illustrated in the fifth volumeof the Vitruvius Britannicus, where he was described as thearchitect. Hercules-Langford Rowley, , an ancestor of the present Lord gentleman also secured their services in the decoration of histown house in Mary Street, Dublin. On the 30th of Aug-ust 1765,Robert Adam was appointed Clerk of the Works at the RoyalChelsea Hospital. In this office it was necessary for him to super-intend all the works of reparation that were needed, in order tomaintain the various buildings in a proper condition, and also toprepare estimates of the cost of such work from
