Southern California; . flowers hassomething of the wild-sweetness of the mountains distilled into fields of grain, which do not require irrigation, reach over many sections of the country as far as theeye can follow, while the uncultivated tracts are givenover to stock and sheep. The sheep shearing, so pictur-esquely described by Helen Hunt Jackson in Ramona,is still a feature of the springtime in many districts. Although these pastoral pursuits form so large andimportant a feature of life in Southern California, thereis another phase that has had a large share in the build-ing up of the country. Stories of a wonderful climate,of open-air life all the year round, of perennial sunshineand of beauties of landscape became noised abroad overthe land. People heard that it was a good place for ahome, and they came and found that it was so. Invalidscame with their families, regained their health andstayed. They wrote home to their friends at that they were enjoying the roses and violets and. orange blossoms, and the next Christmas their friendscame also to escape the blizzards and pneumonia of thenorthern States. In this way the countrj- has been builtup, health and pleasure seekers of one year becoming thesettlers of the next. On New Years day of this year I went to Pasadenato see the Tournament of Roses. It was a vision ofbeautiful, high-stepping horses garlanded with flowers,of lovely children half hidden in masses of bloom, andfair women riding in coaches of flaming were men on horseback and boys on wheels, withflowers over and around all. It was but a type of theflower carnivals and fiestas which have been held in SanDiego, Los Angeles, Pasadena and Santa Barbara for anumber of jears, and is an illustration of the love for thebeautiful things of out of doors which is yearly growingstronger in the minds and hearts of the people of thisfavored land.
