Einstein on a ship. German-Swiss-US physicist Albert Einstein (1879-1955) with a Hilda Michael on a ship. Einstein's theories of relativity (1905 and 1915) replaced the previously unshakeable Newtonian world view, rewriting the concepts of gravity, space and time. His mass-energy equation later led to nuclear fission and the atomic bomb. Einstein also contributed to quantum theory. The following year (1922) he was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the photoelectric effect. He lived in the USA from 1933, encouraging the atomic bomb project and later campaigning for world peace. Photographed circa 1932.
