This former citizen of ancient Etruscan Tuscana, gazing up at the sky from his vantage point in the Giardini Comunale or public gardens in Tuscania, Lazio, Italy, is among many lifelike portrayals of people whose remains were interred in stone sarcophagi in vast necropoli or cemeteries in and around the settlement. From the late-1800s, many of these effigies, sculpted on tomb chest lids, were re-used as distinctive urban furniture and public art in the streets of Tuscania.
Tuscania, Lazio, Italy: an Etruscan citizen stares up at the sky from the Giardini Comunale or public gardens - one of many lifelike portrayals of the inhabitants of the ancient city of Tuscana whose remains were laid to rest in stone sarcophagi, from the 7th or 8th centuries BC onwards, in vast necropoli or cemeteries in and around the settlement. From the late-1800s, many of these effigies, sculpted on the lids of their tomb chests, were re-used as distinctive urban furniture and public art in the streets of this picturesque small town, which lies about 58 miles to the north west of Rome. Today, many more priceless artefacts discovered in the necropoli are also displayed in the town’s museum, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Tuscania, housed in the cloisters of a former Franciscan convent attached to the church of Santa Maria del Riposo.
