Alfred Van Gieson, a reservist with the 735th Air Mobility Squadron at Hickam Field, is seen in a family photograph as a young boy, far right, with his father and other paddlers after an outrigger canoe race in the waters off of Oahu, Hawaii. Today, Van Gieson is a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a world champion outrigger, or Va'a, paddler and the coach of the Leeward Kai Canoe Club, which was founded by his grandparents.
