The P. edwardsi differs from P. poliocephalus inbeing darker on the back of the head, in having the blue ofthe breast of a darker shade, and specially in having the upperparts, including the wings, greenish-black, instead of the purpleback and rump, and greenish-blue wings of colouring of the upper parts is so conspicuously differentin the two species that either can be recognised at a 24 ..THE GENUS PORPHYRIO AND ITS SPECIES. As it is not at all improbable that this species may be found toinhabit some portions of the Tenasserim provinces, I am happyto bring it prominently before Indian Ornithologists, throughthe medium of the accompanying beautiful plate. Adult.—Ear-coverts, lores and space round the eyes, greyishwhite; back of head, brown, darkest in the centre, where it isalmost a brownish-black, with a purple tinge, shading off to agreyish-white towards the head-shield, and the sides of thehead; cheeks, bluish-white ; chin and throat, brownish, with abluish shade ; back and sides of neck, lower part of breast andflanks, dark violet blue; front of neck and upper part ofbreast, shoulders and under wing-coverts, deep turquoise blue;back, rump, wings, secondaries, primaries and tail, uniformgreenish-black; middle of abdomen and crissum, brownishblack ; under tail-coverts, pure white ; bill,
