. Gaillard's medical journal . rubber tube is fitted into the distalopening of the canula, and bears at itsend a funnel-shaped apparatus for the ad-ministration of the anaesthetic. As regards tight closure, satisfactory re-sults were obtained from experiments onthe cadaver, and the usefulness of theinstrument was also sufficiently tested onthe living subject. The case in question, being still unfinished and under treatment, cannot be reported in full at present; somuch, however, as bears on the practicalvalue of the apparatus, may be statedhere. It; became necessary to incise, scrapeout and drain a perichondral abscess con-tiguous with the remaining half of thethyroid cartilage of a patient, on whompartial excision of the larynx had beenperformed about a year ago,and who habitu-ally wore a tracheal tube. The tampon-canula being inserted, no discomfort orpain was felt by the patient. The littleoperation, accompanied as usual by freehaemorrhage, was leisurely finished, andnot one drop of blood passed beyond Solidity of construction, durability ofaction, simplicity and ease in handling, seem to recommend this apparatus overthat of Trendelenburg, especially in pro-longed bloody operations performed withthe aid of anaesthetics in the nasal andoral cavities, the pharynx or larynx. In conclusion, I take pleasure in ex-pressing thanks to George Tieman & Co.,the makers of the instrument, for theirsuccessful efforts in overcoming the tech-nical difficulties of the task.
