Provisions were scarce not only with us but in the stores,and the Illinois river, the only highway to the base of supplies, was frozen soon fell to a greater depth than had ever been known before and ren-dered the country roads well nigh impassable while it was fresh and entirelyso when it turned to mud and slush. At the new house it sifted through everycrevice and it was no raritv to shake several inches of snow oft our beds in.
