Wide view of interior. Private residence, London, United Kingdom. Architect: Alexander Martin Architects, 2015.
The rear extension is realised as two stacked black boxes, providing a strong visual contrast against the rich mix of London Stock brick walls of the original houses. Large openings were punctuated to ensure generous daylighting and views to the garden. The ground floor living spaces are defined as 4 distinct areas, through changes in light and use of materials. The main family space, complete with fireplace opens to the garden, and the kitchen aligns to the roof light above. Joinery is employed to enhance the visual separation of the living areas, whilst concealing the staircase, storage and utility areas. Refurbishment of the upper floors included replacement a new folded timber panelled stair, whilst bathrooms and bedroom spaces were remodelled in keeping with the simple and subtle palette of materials.
