A reputation for enterprise of the rightsort is a mighty help towards success, and itis this kind of a reputation which makesthe subject of this sketch among the mostprominent young men of Columbia county. .Vrthur Amasa Porter, son of John Lor-enzo anil Ann Eliza (Boies) Porter, wasborn at Pacific, Columbia county, Wiscon-sin, on the north one-half of northeast quar-ter of section 22i, township 12, range 9, July15, 1857, where his boyhood days were reaching his majority he taught schoolin different parts of his native county forabout twelve years, until 1889, when he wascommissioned postmaster at the office at Pa-cific, which position he held till he waselected register of deeds for Columbia coun-ty in 1894, and re-elected in 1896. Duringthis time he made a complete abstract oftitles of Columbia county, which are nowIns personal property, and which, in conjunc-tion with real estate, furnishes him a \erylucrative COMPENDIUM OF BIOGRAPHY. 613 In the fall 1898 the Republican partyof his county showed their appreciation ofhis ability and tact by electing him chairmanof the county committee, and re-electing himin 1900, which position he still fills to theentire satisfaction of his part}-. In thespring of 1900 he was elected ;i delegate Republican national convention lield atPhiladelphia June 19, 1900, from the Secondcongressional district of Wisconsin. He was married April 23, 1883 to MaryA. Rhynesmith, daughter of John L. andElmyra (Harvey) Rhynesmith, and grand-daughter of Charles Ryhnesmith, and great-granddaughter of John Rhynesmith, of Bin-gen on the Rhine. She was also grand-daughter if Francis Marzale on her mothersside. Two chiklren are the result of thismarriage; Hazel E., born ]\[ay 13, 1889, andGlad}-s Marion, born May 11, 1894. Sir. Porter is now living in the city ofPortage.
