Spotsylvania Courthouse is located in northeast Virginia, and was the site of several major Civil War battles.


Spotsylvania Courthouse is located in northeast Virginia, and, in the 1800s, belonged to Alexander Spotswood. During the Civil War, it was the site of the battles of Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville and in the Wilderness Campaign of the Battle of Spotsylvania on May 8-19, 1864. The Confederates forced Union general Grant to retreat, after he lost tens of thousands of soldiers.
