Bottom of the coffin of Chelidonia early 3rd century AD Thebes (Tamarind wood painted with tempera Thebes tombs) Egypt Egyptian , In Roman times, the ancient Thebes no longer exists: the city of Diospolis Magna (Louqsor) extends on the east bank of the Nile while the west bank (Memnonia) now depends on the city of Hermonthis (Armant ). The long-established funerary tradition for the Egyptian elite is better maintained here than elsewhere, by the care given to mummification, the skilful integration of ancient iconography and the use of cartonnage techniques, especially in stuccoed linen.
