The leaves areplucked from the trees and ted to the silk-worms ; and when these caterpillars reach theright stage, they spin the cocoons which are ofso much value. Neither lumbering nor fishing is ofvery great importance in France. Yet,Lumbering as in Germany, the Frenchand fishing carry on forestry on thepoorer lands. There is some fishingalong the coast, and many vessels go tothe fishing banks of the North Sea. There is some coal, especially near theboundary of Belgium, but France has nosuch important coal beds asare found in both Germanyand England. It is necessary, therefore,to import some from Germany, Belgium,and Great Britain. Neither is there so Mining much iron ore in France as in theseother countries, although there is these reasons the manufacture ofiron goods is far less extensive
