His sudden death, on the 8th of January,1872, gave a shock to the community as the loss of a personalfriend. But a few days before he had been busy with preparationsfor a New Years reception to be given by one of his daughters,—anevent which he anticipated with much pleasure, but which wasdeferred on account of his illness. He died peacefully, as if passinginto sleep.
