Cahaba Lily (Hymenocallis coronaria) bloom in the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge near West Blocton, Alabama
The Cahaba Lily(Hymenocallis coronaria) ,also known as the Shoal Lily or Shoals Spider-Lily, is a perennial flowering plant found growing in river shoals in the Southeastern United States. The lily is found only in the states of Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia and North Carolina. The lilies only grow in shallow, fast moving water and in direct lilies bloom from May till late June and each bloom lasts for only one blooms may be pollinated by the pipevine swallowtail butterfly and possibly the plebeian sphinx lily is under consideration to be awarded protection under the Endangered Species Act due to several entire populations being decimated by dam construction.
