Tie rods, 2 in. x 5/16in. x 5 ft. in size, spaced at 6-ft. intervals and inserted5Ys in. above the rail base, hold the rail to gage. An examination of the data given as a result of thisinvestigation for the amount and character of rail cor-rugation also reveals the fact that this phenomenon isnot a respecter of age or conditions. For instance,much of the oldest track shows no indication of corru-gation, whereas on some of that constructed muchlater corrugations of a maximum wave length anddepth have appeared. It will also be noted that whilethere is more track of the ballasted type of constructionhaving no corrugation than there is of track laid onconcrete foundation, yet there is only per cent ofthe ballasted track showing a trace of corrugation,whereas the
