IBM 704 computer. Operators carrying out calculations using an IBM 704 computer at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Livermore, California, USA. The first of four IBM 704s was delivered here in April 1955. This computer had a larger and better memory than previous ones, was faster than the IBM 701 and much more reliable. Index registers were used for the first time. Magnetic tape drives are in the background. This site, founded in 1952, would by 1980 be known as the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
