Saint Nestor the Chronicler, 11th Century

Saint Nestor the Chronicler (1056 -1114) was the reputed author of the Primary Chronicle, (the earliest East Slavic chronicle). He was a monk of the Monastery of the Caves in Kiev from 1073. The Kiev Monastery of the Caves, is a historic Orthodox Christian monastery. Since its foundation as the cave monastery in 1051 the monastery has been a preeminent center of the Eastern Orthodox Christianity in Eastern Europe. The current theory about Nestor is that the Chronicle is a patchwork of many fragments of chronicles, and that the name of Nestor was attached to it because he wrote the greater part or perhaps because he put the fragments together.
