Artwork of the histology of the jejunum, the terminal/third part of the small bowel. The mucosa forms prominent elongated folds called plica circulares, visible to the naked eye. The surface epithelium of simple columnar cells and goblet cells are formed into very many finger-type extensions called villi. These increase surface area for absorption of lumenal contents. The outer wall is smooth muscle. A solitary lymphoid follicle is shown. Haematoxylin and eosin stain. Magnification x15 when printed 10cm wide. From Sobotta, J. (1911) Atlas und Lehrbuch der Histologie und mikroskopischen Anatomie des Menschen. J. F. Lehmann, Munchen (Plate 27).
