Kysela’s stained glass for Prague Cathedral was created between 1921 and 1936.

Prague, Czech Republic: looking up while shielding her eyes … a detail of kaleidoscopic mosaic stained glass by Czech Art Deco painter, graphic artist and stage designer František Kysela (1881-1941) in a window of the Cathedral of St Vitus. Kysela was a versatile and prolific artist who collaborated with architects on interior painting designs and at various times designed textiles, carpets, tapestries, jewellery, posters, bookplates, diplomas, banknotes and postage stamps. His book illustrations were inspired by Renaissance prints and medieval woodcuts and he also created many stage and costume designs for both opera productions and the theatre. Kysela’s stained glass designs for Prague Cathedral were executed between 1921 and 1936. He died in 1941 after a severe stroke. His wife and son were actively involved in the resistance against the Nazis during World War II and both died in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
