TWO days after myreturn from theice-cap, the Kitesteamed down the bay,and we landed throughthe surf in a shelteredcove about a mile belowRed Cliff. As Mrs. Peary,Astrup, and myself cameup the beach, we met first,my boys, Verhoeff, , Gibson, rugged,bare-headed, sun-burned; then, a little farther, thenative contingent of Red Cliff standing in wide-eyedwonder to see the kapitaiisoak return from the GreatIce. Never did the costliest and most luxurious homeappear more delightful to the eyes of a returningtraveller than the little 7 by 12 state-room at RedCliff, to which Mrs. Peary had given the imposingname of the south parlor. My sledge journey round Inglefield Gulf just be-fore starting upon the ice-cap had acquainted me onlywith the southern shores. Rough ice and deeplydrifted snow had rendered the northern shore im-practicable. 385. Boat Voyage into Inglefield Gulf 2>^7 It was now early in the season, there was no specialhaste for the Kile to turn her bow southward, and theopportunity to examine the unknown and attractiveshores seemed a favourable one. Then, too, a summerboat voyage offered something in the nature of a picnicfor Mrs. Peary and myself after our long separation,an outing which should be free of the rush and hurryof preparation, as of responsibility or anxiety in regard Verhoeff. Dr. Cook. Gibson.
