A late 19th century view of the ruins of Holy Cross Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1169 by King Donal O'Brien of Thomond, in Holycross near Thurles, County Tipperary, Ireland. Situated on the River Suir, it takes its name from a relic of the True Cross or Holy Rood brought to Ireland around 1233 by the Plantagenet Queen Isabella of Angoulême, widow of King John. The relic, which she bestowed to the monastery was last exposed for public veneration in 1632. Following the Cromwellian war, the abbey fell into ruins. Footnote: it was completely restored in 1969
