They seemed too confin-ing and too irritating, and as they were always get-ting wet, were a source of trouble both to baby andmyself. So I consulted Professor Fisher of Yale, fivedoctors and three maternity hospitals, and read whatI found in seven books that gave advice concerningthe layette. Without going into the details of thisinvestigation, at the close of it I became suspiciousthat the bandage and the use of flannel were butrelics of customs and tradition. At any rate, I feltjustified in giving cotton a trial and in removing thebandage. So, while keeping a most careful watchupon the babys condition, I discarded, one by one,the bandage, the shirt, the skirt, and even the cottonmuslin dress.
