Scene of Thomas Thynne's murder in Pall Mall, Westminster, London, 1682 (c1775). Artist: James Basire I

Scene of Thomas Thynne's murder in Pall Mall, Westminster, London, 1682 (c1775). Scene showing two men on horseback shooting their victim in his carriage. A wealthy landowner and MP for Wiltshire, Thomas Thynne married Lady Elizabeth Percy, daughter of the Earl of Northumberland, in 1681 but was then assassinated the following year by Count Karl Johann von Konigsmark, a rival suitor. Konigsmark was acquitted of the crime, allegedly due to corruption of the jury, but his accomplices, Christopher Vratz, John Stern and Charles George Borosky, were hanged.
