Maiden Castle late C4thAD pagan Romano-Celtic temple: central shrine surrounded by an ambulatory with entrances at the E. Built when the official Roman religion was Christianity & after the fort had been abandoned since Roman capture in the C1stAD. The E end of the fort seems to have served as a sacred precinct with a variety of shrines from the prehistoric Iron Age through to the late Roman period.
