MONTREAL, Canada — Montreal's Olympic Stadium (Stade olympique) was built for the 1976 summer Olympics. In recent years, since the Montreal Expos baseball team relocated to Washington DC, it has no regular tenant and is used for special events.
Photograph by David Coleman. Montreal's Olympic Stadium, affectionately known as "The Big O," is a striking architectural marvel that has defined the city's skyline since its construction for the 1976 Summer Olympics. Designed by French architect Roger Taillibert, the stadium is renowned for its distinctive inclined tower, the tallest of its kind in the world at 165 meters. The stadium's most notable features are its massive concrete structure and the world's largest cable-supported retractable roof, although technical issues have kept the roof permanently closed since the late 1980s. The tower, originally intended to operate the retractable roof, now houses an observatory offering panoramic views of Montreal. Despite controversies surrounding its cost and maintenance, the Olympic Stadium remains a significant Montreal landmark and tourist attraction. It has hosted various events, from baseball games to concerts, and stands as a testament to the ambitious architectural vision of the 1970s. The stadium's unique design continues to fascinate visitors and serves as a prominent reminder of Montreal's Olympic legacy.
