Pneumonia. Coloured chest X-ray of a seven year old girl with pneumonia. The infection is seen as the area of inflammation (pale blue, lower right) in the lung at right (pale purple). The bones of the spine, ribcage and shoulders are pink, blue and yellow. Pneumonia is usually due to a bacterial or viral infection. Symptoms include fever, difficulty in breathing and a cough that produces yellow/green sputum. Pneumonia is most common in infants, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems, especially as a complication of another serious illness. Treatment depends on the infection involved, for example antibiotic drugs for bacterial infection.
