The mine produces a large quantity of water, which keeps aportion of the roads quite wet and muddy. There are two electric pumpsand three other pumps operated by compressed air used for pumping thewater out of this mine. Two 14 ton electric motors are used for haulingthe coal out of this mine. The ventilation, which is produced by a fan,is good, but the distribution of air could be improved upon. J. C. BRYDON, Supt. C. H. BICE, Mine JERRY MEADE. 1901 Inspector of Mines. 157 GRANT COUNTY. CONDITION OF MINES REPORTED BY JERRY MEADE. DAVIS COAL AND COKE COMPANY. No. 119. HENRY SHAFT. On February 15th, 1901, this plant was visited. This is a new shaftthat is being sunk, ground having been broken on February 15th, is 10 feet by 24 feet in the clear, and on date of visit was down about 203feet. The first 150 feet was driven through fire clay, shale and bone,and the last 50 feet through a hard white sandstone. The timber that Isbeing used is 10x10, placed 20 inches apart. The Shaft is very wet, andrequires the use of seven pumps to keep the water out, five of the sevenbeing constantly in use. The shaft is located on the line of the W. & P. Railroad at Henry, ten miles north of Thomas. The first coalseam that will be reached is that now being worked in the Thomas Driftand known as the Upper Freeport coal. It is the intention to sink thisshaft to the Davis, or Kittann
