Lilac Brested Roller perched on a dead lookout tree branch This roller is 11 to 12 inches in length with the tail streamers adding another 3 inches Both sexes are alike with lilac throat and pale azure belly the bend of the wing is bright dark blue while the flight feathers are a brilliant turquoise Preferred habitat for this species is dry open rolling Acacia thorn bush game land and riverside woodland Normally hunting from a perch in a dead tree bush or wires it flies out to seize its prey of invertebrates lizards and occasionally small birds Included in its diet are locusts grasshoppers crickets beetles moths butterflies spiders scorpions snails and frogs Nesting in cavities in dead trees and sometimes termite mounds nest material is made up of a flat pad of dried grass with the 2 to 4 eggs being incubated by both sexes
