Muscles Attached.—Insertions.—Mm. vasti medialis, lateralis and intermediusand the rectus femoris (four). THE TIBIA The tibia or shin bone is the larger and stronger bone of the consists of a proximal extremity, shaft and distal extremity. The proximal extremity comprises the condyles, the intercondyliceminence and the tuberosity. The condyles constitute a flat massthat caps the proximal end of the shaft. The proximal surface of eachcondyle is concave and articular. The lateral is the smaller andnearly circular in outline. Near the middle of the intercondylic Anterior inttrcondyloid fossa \ ^ Tuberosity of tibia External condyleHead of fibula. Posterior intereondytoid fossa External Intereondytoid tubercle Fig. 70.—The proximal extremities of the right tibia and fibula seen from and McMurrich.) area is the intercondylic eminence {eminentia intercondyloidea);this presents two peaks, or tubercles, the tuberculum intercondyloideumlaterale and tub. inter, mediate. The depression ventral and dorsalto the eminence constitute the ventral and dorsal inter condyloidfossce. Here are attached the ventral and dorsal cruciate hga-ments and the menisci of the knee joint. The lateral condyleprojects well beyond the side of the shaft and presents a smalldorsolateral facet for articulation with the proximal extremity ofthe fibula. Ventrally the iliotibal band (tracMs iliotibialis) isattached, the tendon of the m. biceps femoris is inserted and themm. extensor digitorum longus and peroneus longus arise. Thedorsomedial margin of the medial condyle is grooved for the inser-tion of the m. semimembranosus.
