The wood opera-tions are car-ried on in thewinter and inthe spring ; allthe timber cutduring the coldmonths isdriven direct tot h e boomingground bymeans of theSpanish River,which, with itst r i buta r 1 e s,drains the con-cession. When thelogs have beendriven downthe streamsand rivers intoproximity t othe mills, pro-vision has beenmade for theirRiver runshead. The penstocks lead away from this damto the power-house, being controlled by gates operated byhand power, the mechanism being placed on the top of thedam. At one end a spillway is provided for getting rid ofice, logs, etc. The manufacturing process commences when the logsfirst leave the booming ground. At this stage they vary inlength from eight to sixteen feet. As they emerge from thebooming ground the logs are raised on an inclined cableuntil they are on a level with a sixteen-foot slasher containedin a solid brick building far above the level of all the otherbuildings comprising the pulp plant. The slasher cuts allthe logs into two-foot lengths. The dissevered logs, with- out any handling, drop directly from the slash table into acable storage conveyor, which is six hundred feet long andsixty feet high. The wo
