The Jamestown Exposition The Jamestown Ter-centennial had its origin in a jointresolution passed by the General Assembly of the Commonwealthof Virginia in February, 1901. This resolution called upon thecities of Virginia to present plans for the proper celebration ofthe first permanent settlement of English-speaking people inthis country at Jamestown, and for the purpose of fittinglycommemorating before the world the real birthplace of ourNation. Mr. G. T. Shepperd (the present secretary of theJamestown Exposition Company), together with Mr. J. (at that time editor of the Norfolk Dispatch) andHon. John G. Tilton (the present Commonwealths attorney),inaugurated a plan and presented same to the public. Followingthis, a resolution was passed by the Councils of the City of Nor-folk committing the City to the proposition, and inviting thecities of Portsmouth, Newport News, and Hampton, a
