The treatment of disease by electric currents : a hand-book of plain instructions for the general practitioner . tly assisted by skilfully handled static electricitythan by any other therapeutic agent. The long and slow con-valescence following malignant diphtheria, a period which some-times drags along for several years, may be brought to a compar-atively speedy finish in the manner above described. It isimpossible to speak too strongly of the benefits of static elec-tricity during convalescence from exhausting diseases. While no other current equals the general benefits of genera-static electrification in this class of cases, yet induction coilcurrents may be employed by both general and localizedmethods for nerve and muscle effects. The common familyfaradic battery is indeed employed in hundreds of these cases, but is utterly worthless from the standpoint of scientific electro-therapeutics. The money spent for cheap faradic boxes, evenupon the order of physicians, is thrown away. If the muscles of the vocal apparatus are affected moistentwo ordinary sponge-covered hand electrodes and apply one. Fig. 370. Ordinary sponge-covered hand electrode. TREATMENT OF PARALYSIS. 821 upon each side of the larynx. Connect them to the oppositepoles of high-tension induction coil apparatus. Switch intocircuit the 1,500 yard No. 36 coil, the rapid vibrator and threeor four cells. With the electrodes firmly in position on theopposite sides of the larynx increase the current strength fromzero by means of the rheostat until the grasp upon the tissues isstrong but painless. The patient should attempt swallowingmovements and practise inaudible sounds while the current ispassing. After about five minutes of this application switch from therapid to the slow vibrator without making any other change inthe current or electrodes. Next increase the current strength to the point of causingvigorous single contractions at the rate of about 80 or 100 perminute. Exercise in this way the muscles
