Colorful Ceramics at The Historic Old Cellars with River Exe and Visitors enjoying a Sunny Autumn Afternoon, Exeter Quay, Devon

The Old Cellars on Exeter Quay are a great place to browse. They are full of character being run by independent retailers. The waterfront location always provides plenty of interest. There has been a quay in Exeter since Roman times but in the 13th and 14th centuries attempts were made to restrict this by rival merchants who built weirs across the river Exe near Topsham. Later it took two years for John Trew to build the first stretch of the Exeter Canal from 1564 to 1566. With cargo now being transported nearer to the city the ports use increased resulting in the construction project of 1680. The Custom House on Exeter Quay was built in 1680 together with the Quay House which is a long warehouse as part of a 'modernisation' project. The Custom House is now used as a visitor and interpretation centre. Exeter's wealth was created through wool which was produced locally and finished in the Cricklepit area (Now headquarters for the Devon Wildlife Trust). Wool was loaded onto ships for export and returning imports included olive oil, salt cod and wine. The Custom House was built as a base to collect tax on these goods. Although the establishment of the railway in 1844 meant the decline of the Quay's commercial importance Georgian and Victorian developments give this area its current character, which remains one of the most popular and attractive areas of the city with the historic architecture housing many restaurants and pubs and boutique shops.
