Universe's large-scale structure. Computer artwork of the large-scale structure of the universe, showing galaxy superclusters (red) arranged in long filaments and concentrated at nodes. Galaxy superclusters are vast assemblages of thousands of galaxies or more. The superclusters form the filaments seen here. The voids between filaments can be billions of light years across. This distribution of galaxies is thought to result from ripples of higher density in the early Universe following its creation in the Big Bang.
