Complexo do Alemão, Rio de Janeiro favela, Brazil. A Gondola lift built by the Leitner-Poma group now spans the Complexo do Alemao allowing residents a faster commute. It is popularly called "Bondinho do Alemao", and has become a popular destination for foreign tourists on the weekend. It is the first mass transit aerial lift passenger system in Brazil and is integrated into the urban rail transport system. Since 2012 the place has operations of the Pacifying Police Unit ( Unidade de Polícia Pacificadora, also translated as Police Pacification Unit ), abbreviated UPP, a law enforcement and social services program which aims at reclaiming territories, more commonly favelas, controlled by gangs of drug dealers.
