As with the passenger engines, the goods andtank engines of recent construction are generallymuch bigger than those which were built a fewyears ago. A considerable part of the goods trafficis worked by six-coupled four-cylinder compound 64 FRENCH RAILWAYS engines with a leading bogie and wheels of moderatediameter (4-6-0), which are also used for passengertrains. Several of the railways have adopted goodsengines with much the same boilers as the biggestexpress engines, running on ten wheels, eight ofwhich are coupled (2-8-0). The four-cylindercompound system is employed in these engines.
