Mt. Etna, Sicily
Mount Etna, satellite image. North is at top. The volcano is at lower center, with steam and smoke (white) rising from its crater. Vegetation is red, lava flows are dark grey, rivers are light blue, and the sea is black. Barren areas (which include urban areas) are grey/white. Mount Etna occupies the eastern part of the Italian island of Sicily. It is the largest and most active volcano in Europe, and stands 3323 meters above sea level. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The area shown in this image is around 60 kilometers wide. The image data includes infrared wavelengths, and was obtained on 29 July 2001, using the ASTER sensor on the Terra satellite.
