In 509 the Roman Republic began, with Brutus (bust shown here) and Collatinus as the first two consuls.

According to Roman traditional history, in 510 , two Romans, Collatinus and Junius Brutus, angered that a relation of their king (who was actually an Etruscan) had violated Collatinus' wife, Lucretia, roused the people of Rome to turn on the king—Tarquinius Superbus. They did and the monarchy was overthrown and in 509 the Roman Republic began, with Brutus and Collatinus as the first two consuls. The drawing is of a bust of Brutus housed in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
